002. Days of the week

The most basic knowledge you need to have: Los días de la semana.

Días entre semana (weekdays)

• Lunes

• Martes

• Miércoles

• Jueves

• Viernes

Fin de semana (weekends)

• Sábado

• Domingo

As you can see, weekdays in Spanish is like if we are saying “the days between the week”. And for the word weekends, we are saying “end of the week”. Both term can be used in singular and in plural as:

• “Día entre semana” (singular, one) and “días entre semana” (plural, several).

• “Fin de semana” (singular, one) and “fines de semana” (plural, several)

Ejemplo. Hagamos la cena un día entre semana porque los fines de semana nosotros trabajamos. English: Let’s do our dinner on a weekday because we work on the weekends.

On the following practice you will find some of the most common questions you can ask or be asked about the days of the week in Spanish.

Practice. Answer the following questions:

1. ¿Qué día es hoy?

2. ¿Qué días estás libre esta semana?

3. ¿Qué días trabajas?

4. ¿Qué día estudias español?

5. ¿Qué día puedo llamarte?

6. ¿Cuándo tienes tiempo?

7. ¿Qué día empiezas? (anything, a job, lessons, etc.)

8. ¿Qué día es el concierto? (or any event)

9. ¿Cuándo pasó eso? (any situation that happened)

10. ¿Tienes planes esta semana?

Now, how do your answer to those questions? If you always say “en martes” because in English you say “on Tuesday” let me correct you, this is incorrect. So, in Spanish you use the definite article singular “el” or, the plural “los” to refer the day or days you do something.

• On Monday & on Mondays: el lunes/ los lunes

• On Tueday & on Tuesdays: el martes/ los martes

• On Wednesday & on Wednesdays: el miércoles/ los miércoles

• On Thursday & on Thursdays: el jueves/ los jueves

• On Friday & on Fridays: el viernes/ los viernes

• On Saturday & on Saturdays: el sábados/ los sábados

• On Sunday & on Sundays: el domingo/ los domingos

Ejemplo: El lunes voy a jugar tenis y el miércoles voy a correr. Porque los martes y jueves voy al gimnasio. English: On Monday I am going to play tennis and Wednesday I am going to run. Because on Tuesdays and Thursdays I go to the gym.

How to express you do something at a specific time of the day?

• Por la mañana/ en la mañana.

• Por la tarde/ en la tarde.

• Por la noche/ en la noche.

Ejemplo: Los viernes por las mañanas hago pilates y en las tardes trabajo. On Friday mornings I do pilates and in the afternoons I work.
